Portland, ME (November 22, 2011) - Planet Dog ( is proud to announce that it is the recipient of the 2011 Small Business of the Year Award from the Portland Development Corporation. The award will be presented at the City of Portland's Sixteenth Annual Business Awards Presentation taking place on Wednesday, November 30th from 4:30pm - 6:00pm at Ocean Gateway.

In addition to Planet Dog's 2011 Small Business of the Year Award, the Portland Development Corporation (a quasi municipal corporation of the City of Portland that creates and fosters economic development within the city), will also present two other business awards. The Greater Portland Convention & Visitors Bureau will receive the 2011 Economic Development Achievement Award and the Via Agency will receive the 2011 Business of the Year Award. All three are being recognized for playing a major role in developing Portland's economic vitality.

Planet Dog has evolved into an award-winning and well respected pet industry leader with proven values-based initiatives that bring people and dogs together for fun and mutual support. They "romp the romp" by: supporting their local community; keeping the tails of their "pack" wagging with a progressive and family-friendly work environment; creating an array of non-toxic and recyclable products that produce virtually no waste; providing financial resources to those in need; and educating consumers about canine-related issues.

Planet Dog has played an instrumental role in the redevelopment of Portland's Bayside neighborhood, a former industrial area, into a livable, walkable and vibrant urban greenway. Planet Dog is helping to preserve local romplands and create new green space. As a Corporate Sponsor, Planet Dog has donated $101,000 to support the Bayside Project as well as 101 dogwood trees planted along the new Bayside Trail.

The Planet Dog Foundation (PDF) is the philanthropic arm of Planet Dog, the globally recognized designer and developer of innovative, high-quality and award-winning dog products that enhance the lifestyle people share with their canine companions. Planet Dog is proud to donate 2% of all purchases of Planet Dog products to the Planet Dog Foundation. PDF provides cash grants to programs throughout the country that train, place and support dogs helping people in need.

Since 2006, PDF has contributed over $800,000 dollars in cash and in-kind product donations to exemplary canine service programs. Most recently, PDF awarded more than $68,000 in grants to ten non-profits in Maine and beyond in celebration of 10 years of giving.

"There is great need for funding to support service dogs and the amazing ways they are helping children and adults in Maine and across the country," says Kristen Smith, the Executive Director of the Planet Dog Foundation. "The PDF grants are helping children and adults with physical and developmental disabilities; incarcerated men and women; injured service members; at-risk youth; natural disaster survivors and many more people in need," adds Smith.
